John Baptiste Dumoutet, c.1795 TABLESPOON
John Baptiste Dumoutet (b.1761-d.1813) French born, retailer working in Philadelphia prior to 1802, and Charleston, S.C., 1802-1813,120 Braod Street, moving to 99 Broad Street. Sold jewelry silver, fashionable millinery, patent and family medicines. After Dumoutet's death in 1813 his widow, Elizabeth Dumoutet, carried on the business. In June of 1816 she advertised that she had received a shipment which included a " a few dozen elegant clasps for indispensibles." She continued the business until the fall of 1823, when an advertisement announced "the subscriber will positively close her business in Charlestion this winter and has commenced selling off her present stock below the original cost prices."
Tablespoon is hallmarked DUMOUTET. Excellent condition with nice patina.
Engraved on the front "ARB 1776" and on the reverse "FWG 1893"
